Play! by Sephora Beauty Subscription Box

A little review! Play by Sephora Beauty subscription box November 2017

A few months back, I received an email from Sephora about open spots for their beauty subscription box. I rarely ever wear makeup and my skincare routine is very simple, so I usually don’t sign up for beauty subscription boxes. Especially since I’ve been on a strict budget for the past couple of months, I, shopaholic extraordinaire, tried to stay away from all of the shops both online and physical. Now that I can loosen my purse strings a little, I’ve been exploring all of the shops and feasting my eyes. This box first drew my attention because it is so inexpensive, only $10! I’ve gotten it for 2 months now, and I want to share this little bit of joy with you!

How it works!

When they have open spots, you are able to subscribe and begin receiving boxes with free shipping. You create a PLAY! PROFILE where you answer questions about your skin, makeup and skincare preferences which they will use to curate your boxes. p.s. They only ship to the US. They usually charge your card within the first few days of the month, and your bow will arrive by the second week of the month.

The box comes with 5 beauty samples either hair products, makeup or skincare and a monthly fragrance bonus item all in a theme specific collectible bag every month.

They have a video for each month detailing how to use the products.

There is a little booklet which has how-tos and product info with a play pass which you can redeem in store for 50 bonus Beauty Insider points and a free one-on-one tutorial.

They also have PLAY! DATES which are monthly meetups to teach you how to get the most out of the products in your box.

Glowing Skin in 7 Easy Steps!

With sunny, warm days rolling around, we’re all frantically looking for ways to awaken the inner sunlight locked within our skin.

Personally, I have always suffered from acne and oily skin (a little too much inner sunlight). All through primary This year I have decided to start a skincare journey to improve texture, acne scars and overall complexion.

Here are some of the tried and true methods I will be testing over the next couple of months!

Water

a95be5b7d0e1dc3c948ac79f37d49875

I know, I know. I understand, BUT we cannot get away from this one. Everywhere you look, people say we should drink x glasses of water each day for all different health benefits from colds to complexion.

And they’re right, we all need to up our water intake to keep our body hydrated and refreshed! The human body is 60% water so let’s not starve our cells; down that H2O.

Cleanse

African American woman washing face

In order to see the true beauty of your skin, it must be clean! All of the dirt, grime and oil that collects on our face clogs our pores and leads to acne and excess oil production. Wash those germs off and allow your skin to breathe!

Sleeping in Makeup is NOT Cool

baby-wipes

You’ve slayed the entire day. All the people were staring at your face out of jealousy or admiration, you don’t care why. You know you look drop dead gorgeous, and you’ve flaunted it all. You’re home now, and you’re dead tired, so you fall right into bed. Do you really want to drag yourself to the bathroom to wipe of your make-up? No! But hunny! Get your ass up, and wipe that stuff off if you want to maintain or improve your skin!

Sleeping in makeup will lead to breakouts, dry skin, wrinkles, chapped lips and even eye infections and irritations. Yikes!

Use A Toner

AAEAAQAAAAAAAA

For an extra cleanse after using a face wash or balm, use a toner to remove the deep set oil, dirt and grime. They are most helpful for those of us who suffer from oily or acne-prone skin, like myself, or for people who want extra cleansing after wearing makeup or other heavy skin products such as sun screen, also like myself.

Witch Hazel is a natural astringent that can help with acne control by reducing inflammation and decreasing excess oil.

Moisturize and Hydrate

moisturizedryskinnaturally

Dry skin wont glow! Simply said. Cleansing and even just being exposed to air will remove the natural moisture from our skin.

It’s good to use a moisturizer with humectants which are chemicals that attract water to improve hydration. This group of chemicals include glycerin, propylene glycol, and urea. Products with alpha-hydroxy acids, AHAs, help reduce wrinkles and improve dry skin, acne, and age spots by speeding up the turnover of old skin cells, making skin look younger, and they occur naturally in grapes, apples, citrus, and sour milk like buttermilk or yogurt.

Face Oils

best-face-oils-for-naturally-clear-flawless-skin-1080x675

I, with my oily skin, have always been against using face oils, but I have recently been enlightened by the wonderfulness that are face oils! There are many essential oils which may be used to clear the skin so find one or five which you can combine to use daily to brighten your skin! There are also many commercial options out there for those of us who aren’t here for a diy.

Sunscreen

dangers-of-sunscreen-vancouver-naturopath

Even though we want to unlock our inner sunlight, we need to protect our skin from the actual sunlight. Sunscreen, whether natural or home-made, will protect our skin from the harmful UV rays in sunlight which cause pre-mature aging, skin cancer and sunburn. Carrot Seed Oil has an spf of 35-40 and shea butter and coconut oil has a spf value of 4-6.

These are all basic and simple methods to improve the brightness and overall strength and health of your skin. Get to work and glow brighter than the sun this summer!

10 Most Powerful Essential Oils to Banish Acne for Clear Skin

The natural oil produced by our skin in sebaceous glands, sebum, is intended to prevent our skin from becoming dry, but this oil can sometimes be produced in excess. The excess oil clogs the hair follicles in our skin and causes a build up of dead skin cells. This accumulation, over time, forms blackheads.

The blockage may also facilitate inflammation or swelling due to the growth of a harmless bacterium called Propionibacterium acnes, and others, which results in bump-like spots, papules or white spots, pustules.

Essential oils have been used for centuries to clear acne quickly and organically, and can be combined with a carrier oil, like Jojoba Oil, Olive Oil or Coconut Oil.

Tea Tree Oil

tea tree oil

Tea Tree Oil anti-fungal, anti-viral, antiseptic and antibacterial properties help to reduce the inflammation and swelling caused by acne. The oil will penetrate the skin to free blocked glands and hair follicles by disinfecting pores and removing whiteheads, blackheads, pimples and other blemishes. It also works as a solvent to remove dust and grease easily, and protect the skin from oxidative stress.

Applying the oil can be used to soothe and treat cuts, burns, and other skin disorders, and it helps in reducing the likelihood of developing an infection. It is also helpful in treating corns and warts.

Be aware that it dries the skin, so use a moisturizer. A good dilution ratio is 3 drops of tea tree oil to 1 teaspoon of carrier oil. Although, if you have extra sensitive skin, it is recommended that you do 1-2 drops of oil.

Lavender Oil

lavender-oil

Lavender Oil is known to soothe and nourish the skin, while being antimicrobial and antioxidant. It can heal dry skin, and reduce the appearance of dark spots and scars caused by acne.

Lavender interacts with the autonomic nervous system, and causes the release of a hormone called corticotrophin releasing hormone, CRH, which stimulates the release of histamine (compound that triggers allergic reactions). This helps with burns because histamine causes the burnt tissue to be blocked off so it may heal faster.

However, Lavender as a carminative may redden the skin and make pimples look more prominent because it relaxes the muscles around blood vessels so that they deliver more blood to the face.

If you choose to add it to your skincare routine, use a daily moisturizer with lavender oil or make your own by adding carrier oils jojoba and almond oil and applying to the areas of concern twice daily.

Bergamot Oil

bergamot-oil-acne

Amazing Bergamot Oil from the bergamot fruit rind has a citrus aroma and antibacterial properties which work to eliminate black spots and blemishes on the skin. It is a lightweight dry oil which sinks directly into the skin to heal and balance from below the surface.

As a natural cleanser, it removes dirt and impurities to unclog pores, and can be used to balance oily skin and even tone.

It also easily combines with carriers like coconut , jojoba and olive oils.

Rosemary Oil

fir tree essential oil

Rosemary Oil can be used to reduce excess oil, and its anti-inflammatory properties reduces the redness and puffiness caused by acne. It is antibacterial because it kills a wide spectrum of bacteria, including Propionibacterium acnes. It can also remove numerous reactive oxygen species, and can protect against UVB radiation.

Get glowing skin by regularly using a cleanser, scrub or moisturizer that contains naturally astringent rosemary essential oil. Use a moisturizer that contains rosemary regularly to get a perfect acne treatment.

Cypress Oil

cypress

Cypress Oil is extracted through steam distillation of the cypress twigs. It helps tone the skin, prevent large skin pores and provides relief from the overactive sebum glands that makes skin oily and prone to blemishes. The antiseptic and astringent properties of cypress control and speed up healing time.

This oil is non-irritant and non-phototoxic (safe for sun exposure). Its circulatory benefits cause cypress oil to awaken dull complexions, regulate blood flow and remove spider veins.

Even though it has many benefits, it’s important to dilute in a carrier oil.

Lemongrass Oil

lemongrass

Lemongrass Oil is obtained by steam distillation from lemongrass leaves and stems.

It has vitamin A, which enhances skin cell repair that replaces the dead skin cells for cell renewal, and vitamin E, which lightens acne spots and blemish scars.

Frankincense Oil

Frankincense-oil

Frankincense has been documented as a valuable and precious commodity traded in the African and Arabian regions over 5000 years ago. It is mentioned as a powerful remedy regularly used in ancient Chinese medical texts from as early as 500 BC. It is used against a myriad of ailments such as arthritis, indigestion, headaches, skin issues, feminine health issues, respiratory conditions such as bronchitis, weak immune system, infected wounds and more.

Frankincense Oil is a personal favorite for most people. It has wonderful healing and revitalizing properties that help all types of skin. This oil is a great choice for healthy and youthful skin without acne scars, and reduced wrinkles. It is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, astringent and controls oily skin.

Oregano Oil

Oil-Of-Oregano-

Oregano Oil has a higher percentage of phenol which is an organic compound with strong disinfectant properties.

Use small amounts because oregano tends to cause skin irritation. It is highly recommended that you dilute this essential oil with a carrier oil.

Chamomile Oil

oil in a glass bottle on the background of camomile flowers

Chamomile Oil calms irritation caused by acne and lightens the black spots and scarring. Chamomile oil has antibacterial activity which helps to reduce the growth of acne-causing bacteria, including P. acnes bacteria.

It promotes skin renewal to keep your skin young and refreshing. Chamomile tea is also very popular because it has anti-anxiety and sleep-inducing properties.

Add a few drops of chamomile oil to your face daily after wash.

Geranium oil

geranium-oil-

Geranium Oil is green and has a very strong scent. Its rich antibacterial, anti-fungal, antiseptic and antioxidant properties make it fit for acne elimination and aging skin.

It is able to kill bacteria that causes outbreaks, eczema, and skin rashes, and helps with free radical removal before and when they cause infection.

This oil is also able to balance sebum production so it’s a great natural alternative for dry, oily, and combination skin. It is a natural cicatrisant, so it heals scars and evens skin tone while tightening skin to maintain or achieve soft and supple skin.

Add a few drops of geranium essential oil to your moisturizer, or apply directly to all areas of your skin. You can use it at night when going to sleep to achieve maximum results.

My Collection of Shiny Things :)

My jewelry style tends to be very simple. I love pearl knobs and cute necklaces. Since I am more of a caramel brown, I find that gold complements my skin tone perfectly. I love gold jewelry!

Even though most days I’ll wear my pair of pearl knobs, I love thin hoops on the larger side and other cute knobs. I also have a few pieces that I seldom wear, but I still keep because I can’t bear to let them go. There’s also a soft spot in my heart for temporary tattoos, so i’ll show a few that I have in my collection as well.

Necklaces:

Sunday Riley Sunday School Skincare Kit

I have always had skincare woes. From acne to scarring and hyper-pigmentation, I’ve dealt with it all. After turning 18, my skin began to calm down, but I still have frequent breakouts and lingering blackheads, not to mention discoloration and scarring.

So, I have been on the hunt for a product to make my skin the best it can be, especially since I will be taking photos at graduation, and I’m not one for makeup. The Sunday Riley line has been creeping up on my timelines, and it was recommended by an Instagram account I follow, so I decided to give it a try, why not?

The only reputable place I could find the line was at Sephora so I did my research on the products offered. I chose the new Sunday School skincare kit because the products target skin texture and discoloration issues.

The kit comes with 4 products:

  • Good Genes lactic acid treatment which exfoliates and reduces appearance of skin aging and dark spots.

The kit is sold out online, last I checked, so I had to go in-store to purchase it. Cost: $60 which is expected because of the brand, but beware the containers are tiny. I have only used it once, but will return to give a full review once I run out or if I notice a difference. Hopefully this works, because I have always yearned for clear skin!
